Diego’s Rescue Story

"Columbia!! Let’s go to Columbia and sip coffee in the mountains of Medellín and cocktails in Cartagena!" The perfect destination for two besties -- Jennifer Duncan and Amy Thran -- with a shared passion for exploring new cultures and traveling the world together.

What they didn’t know as they headed South on their quick 5-day trip to Columbia is that their love and passion for animals would completely transform their visit. As they wondered aimlessly in Cartagena, peering into shops, feeling energized by the vibrant colors filling the cobblestone streets, little did they know that one turn of one corner would change their lives forever.

As they stepped into San Diego Square perusing the street vendors' wares, they wandered separate ways for just 10 minutes, and when they met back up they both simultaneously said to one another, ‘If I see that pitiful little brown dog one more time I’m going to have to do something to help him.”

Just seconds passed before the bright brown eyes of the little brown dog looked up at both of them and simply said, “Please help me.” His body and ears were oozing blood and pus, he had hard calluses from sleeping on the street and each rib was well defined.

Jen and Amy went into complete flow as they seamlessly seemed to know exactly what needed to happen without even talking to one another. Jen on the phone, Amy tending to Diego (short for San Diego), and the next thing you know they had a hotel room that accepted dogs, a connection to CTG Paws the rescue group in Colombia and a direct line to the director Moe who walked them through everything that needed to happen to eventually get Diego to the US, Dr. Ximena the vet willing to meet us on a Sunday night at her clinic

The Pet Center, and a cab driver Alvaro Barreto who didn’t mind shuttling a filthy dog across the city. We left Diego at the clinic that night, visited him the next day on the way to the airport, and we haven’t seen him since due to the COVID 19 pandemic.

Diego is finally heading to Lemon Lane Farm in Grandview, TN, Amy's 116-acre farm where she has a herd of rescued animals of all shape and sizes. Diego will live out his days playing in the fields with his new friends and family.
